The lines of an automobile can be as sexy and sensuous as any object on earth. From the Duesenbergs of the classic age to contemporary Ferraris, the design of many are considered works of art in their own right. Breck Rothage of Irvine, California, specializes in his unique vision of the art of the automobile. Using a keen sense of color, light, and texture, he starts with a mere photograph and like a sculptor, he surgically carves away what he does not want and then paints, polishes and fine-tunes the beauty that remains. He often paints in whole-cloth backgrounds that compliment the subject matter. The transformation of the image is hard to define but when you view one of his images you recognize that you are looking at something truly extraordinary. His work adorns the collections of passionate and discerning collectors throughout the world. The width and breadth of his work is comprehensive, from vintage Ferraris, Alfa Romeos, and Porsches to the classic Packards, Lincolns, and Jaguars. In his own words, Breck puts it this way: “I want to squeeze all the emotional beauty into it I can so that it attracts and holds the viewer’s attention. I want the image to command attention and bring wonder and amazement to the viewer.” His final presentation takes the creative vision to another level still, incorporating metallic and acrylic materials, the final artwork at 36 inches is a sight to behold. His works can be found in collections from Southern California to Italy. Most often, Breck is commissioned to create automotive portraits by automotive enthusiasts, but selectively, he also offers limited-edition prints for art-collecting auto buffs to adorn their office or study. His artistry has been recognized by the fine art world. This year, after an extensive vetting process, Breck has been invited to show his artwork at the prestigious Laguna Beach Festival of Arts, California’s premier fine art exhibition. Breck’s latest work is the “Revelation” series. It is fascinating in that it only reveals certain aspects of the car. Here he reveals the soul of the car from darkness, bringing forth headlights and grille and painting a slight wisp of the sensual form of the body.
