Okay, most of these cars won't be found on eBay, but you will find a selection of the gems we've run across in our travels that are for sale.

Not Found on eBay: Ferris Bueller 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Spyder California Replica

"It is his fault he didn't lock the garage," Ferris Bueller.

1960 Ferrari 250GT California Spyder Replica Front View Under the file of "you never quite know what will show up Saturday morning at Cars and Coffee" we have this gem, a well-turned-out replica 1960 Ferrari 250GT California Spyder Convertible, quite similar to the car driven by Mathew Broderick in the 1986 John Hughes classic "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." Previously sold under the name Modena and CalSpyder (before Ferrari put the kibosh on these and other replicas), this car built between 2002 and 2006 by Precision Design and Engineering for its owner, who goes by the name of Chris B. "This is a professionally built and crafted replica," say Chris. "It's not a 'kit car' built on top of some Fiero, Corvette, or Datsun chassis. This car is built upon a custom multi-tube powder-coated chassis with a gorgeous hand-laid fiberglass body. The four cars built for the movie, it features a Ford 302 V8 with four-barrel carburetor and AOD transmission four-speed automatic transmission."

We took an up close and personal look at the car after Cars and Coffee concluded, and with just two minor quibbles, would agree with Chris' assessment of the car; it looks almost as if it rolled down the old line in Maranello in 1960, one of the 104 short- and long-wheelbase 250GT California Spyders built, one of sold last May for almost $11 million.

Not Found on eBay: A Crazy Half Breed, the Torvair
Written by Jim Brennan

What began as a simple web search ended as the discovery of the mother of all mongrels.

1967 Torvair Right-Quarter View I was trying to find "Corvair Wheels" when I came across Larry Boardman's website Classic Wheels, LLC. Along with promoting his business as a certified classic car appraiser and listing his credentials, he also showcases his current crop of collectible iron. One car in particular, the Torvair, has to be the mother of all mongrels.

In the sixties, General Motors produced some of its most innovative designs. The 1960-1969 Corvair, with its air-cooled, rear-engined flat six was not just innovative, it was revolutionary. The Toronado, which in 1966 was Motor Trend's Car of the Year, brought both a V8 and front-wheel-drive to the personal-luxury-coupe class populated by Ford's Thunderbird and Buick's Riviera.

This particular car piqued my interest as it was basically a Corvair coupe with an Oldsmobile Toronado drivetrain tucked under the stylish body in a mid-engined format. There were many Corvair V-8 conversions, but marrying the two most innovative GM creations of the sixties was a stroke of genius. So, after looking at this wonderful beast on his site, I contacted Larry to find out what the Torvair is all about.

Not Found on eBay: Hugh Hefner's 1969 and 1971 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman Limousines

Although we had to go all the way to New Zealand to find this installment of Not Found on eBay, it's well worth it. We've found the Mercedes-Benz limousines once owned by Hugh Hefner, the former editor and publisher of Playboy magazine.

1964 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman from Daimler Archives As an amateur historian and someone actively involved in the print- and on-line-publishing industry, I consider Hugh Hefner to be one of the innovators and giants of the magazine world over the last half century. I really didn't realize until recently while watching his biography on the Biography Channel. No matter how one looks at his sexual attitude and his stand on issues or morality--those would each fill up a book--what he accomplished with the launch of Playboy magazine and its effect on popular culture in mid-century America simply can't be underestimated.

Not Found on eBay: Sonny and Cher's His and Hers 1966 Ford Mustangs

In doing the photo research for Jim Brennan's Italianate Chrysler series, we found out where the famous Sonny and Cher Mustangs landed after their recent sale this past February.

Vintage Photo of Sonny and Cher Mustangs Over a decade ago, I moved to California. After leaving my position as editor of Car Audio and Electronics, I restarted my freelance writing career. Part of the process was visiting local shops, seeing what cars they were working on. In 1999, I visited Mustang Country in nearby Paramount and met the legendary Don Chambers. I asked him what Mustangs he was working on. Don, who at the time was in his sixties I believe, was very friendly. After giving me the rundown on his projects and those of some of his customers, he asked me if I would like to see part of his collection housed next door.

New Photo of Sonny and Cher Mustangs Naturally, I said yes. I thought he might have a couple of early first-generation Mustangs, but was shocked at what I saw. First was one of the 100,000-mile 1964 Mercury Comet Daytona endurance test cars in as-tested condition complete with the rear-seat-mounted wooden tool box. Right next to the Comet were the famous--or infamous depending upon your view of modified Mustangs--George Barris-modified his and hers 1966 Sonny and Cher Ford Mustangs.

Not Found on eBay: The Shah's 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280SE?

Covering four Southern California shows over the weekend turned up some interesting cars not yet listed on eBay or Craigslist.

Mercedes-Benz 280SE Front View One of the byproducts of running all over Southern California looking for feature vehicles for my magazine editors are all the interesting cars I find for sale. No car fits this definition better than the 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280SE coupe shown here. It was sporting a for-sale sign at Cars and Coffee last Saturday at the Ford Western Headquarters in Irvine, California. This particular car, offered for sale by John Morrison, has led what can be called an 'interesting' life over the past 41 years, beginning when the Shah ordered it in Stuttgart, Germany, followed by the cancellation of the order prior to delivery. Over the next 12 years the car belonged to the family of a Spanish diplomat whose wife drove the car in Malta, Madrid, and London until it was sold to its current owner in 1980.
