Crossover, Minivan, SUV, Station Wagon, or All Four?
Our Managing Editor Brandy Schaffels and our Editorial Director Rich Truesdell have known each other for almost 15 years, starting with their time at Motor Trend where Brandy was a Copy Editor and Rich was a Contributing Editor (and in those days Rich's copy needed lots of editing). From that beginning they worked together on motortrend.com where they teamed up to produce international auto show coverage. Last year Rich called on Brandy to help launch Automotive Traveler where her contributions in managing details has been invaluable.
As both test drive dozens of new vehicles each year, they look at these vehicles from different perspectives; Brandy as a working mom with two boys, and Rich as a gearhead who sees things a bit differently.
This week both have driven Ford's new Flex crossover and are here sharing their impressions.

GM's Saturn Division continues to reinvent itself with a Euro-focused replacement for the Ion.
Saturn is a company that is in the process of reinventing itself. Started on the premise of a clean sheet of paper and making the process of buying a new car hassle-free, Saturn has evolved a long way from its origins as a new kind of car company. Nowhere is this more evident than with the introduction of the made-in-Belgium Astra three- and five-door hatchback models.
GM is a global car maker and one of its most mportant components is its European Opel subsidiary. When the plastic-clad Ion was introduced in 2003 it was launched at a time when Americans were preoccupied with trucks and SUVs. While sales were initially respectable, the market was looking elsewhere, especially in a category populated by exceptionally competitive entry-level cars from Asia.

GM builds a word-class sports sedan that hits on all cylinders
With its revitalization of Cadillac, GM has proven that when their designers, stylists, and engineers are unleashed, they can produce world class products. Nowhere is that more evident than with the all-new 2008 Cadillac CTS. In one fell swoop, Cadillac has gone from a bit player in the under $40,000 sport sedan category, to a world class competitor with the leading brands from Germany (Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz) and Japan (Infiniti and Lexus). It’s a game-changing paradigm shift.

When the soft-roader in question is as complete and competent as the all-new 2009 Subaru Forester.
In a class populated by posers and wannabees, Subaru has literally taken the high road with a completely new Forester that raises the bar in the increasingly-competitive small CUV or crossover utility category. While some call these vehicles "soft-roaders" because their off-road abilities are so compromised, the Forester proves conclusively that this need not be the case; here's a compact CUV that can play with the big boys.

The Malibu is one of the most familiar names in Chevrolet's inventory. Starting in 1964, it was attached to some of the most memorable mid-sized cars in the Bowtie's long and storied history. But for most of the last four years, it's been more synonymous with the moniker "instant rental car," as a very high proportion of production has gone directly to Avis. For 2008, the Malibu is all new and Chevy has a lot riding on its success; it is the frontal attack on class leaders Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, as Chevrolet strives to re-establish itself as a benchmark in this category. Have they succeeded?

San Diego is one of my favorite cities, this coming from someone who calls Southern California home, but is so disenchanted by the traffic and how difficult it now seems to get anywhere. With that being said, I have few complaints about Jaguar having selected San Diego and the twisty secondary roads to the east of the city for us to get some seat time behind the wheel of the new XF sports sedan.

The delivery guy drove the 2008 Hummer H2 up the ramp into my parking structure without any problems at all. I watched as he slowly drove under the bar that indicated the height limitation and I could see that he went safely underneath with inches to spare.
Imagine my surprise upon exiting down the ramp, when we felt the roof of the humongous Hummer drag against the pole. And as if that wasn't enough, when the back wheels rolled over the security gate's track, the rearend bounced upward against the limiter, denting the roof of the truck.
Ouch!
